Eventually found the updated Pevear & Volokhonsky translation which made all the difference. Purchase your copy of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky's new translation of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace and King Vidor's slight but nonetheless entertaining film of adaptation at Amazon.com. He puts this monolingual reader to shame. This enormous, 4-pound, 1,273-page Vintage Classics edition of War and Peace tipped the helmet. All these editions of War and Peace are really starting to pile up on my shelves. Elaine makes a misguided attempt to ingratiate herself with a famous Russian writer (hilariously named Testikov) by telling him what Jerry had jokingly told her earlier: that the original title of War and Peace was War, What Is It Good For? When I first saw Bondarchuk's "War and Peace," in 1968, in New York, it was presented in two parts and ran six hours. We'll see on that day where I stand with my resolution to read Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace in 2010. They did a great job with Anna Karenina, and Penguin did a great job packaging it. Things don't turn out well for her after that. I don't know if that's maybe my translation, (I'm reading a different translator--Pevear & Volokhonsky) or just a case of the book being longer and more ambitious. I was all set to write about how excited I am at the new Pevear/Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace. I hope to find the time to read the recent translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. War-and-peace-maude Although Brigg's translation is excellent, I am most familiar with the Maude translation.
